St. Paul 1 - in the 4th arrondisement of the Marais
Figaro, Figaro, Figaro, Figaro ……la,la,la,la….’
Yes, ‘twas right here in the heart of the Marais that Caron de Beaumarchais breathed life into his famous barber, Figaro, best know to us today perhaps by Rossini’s operatic interpretations of the famous plays.
Beaumarchais lived at no.47 Rue Vielle de Temple from 1776 in what was known as the Hotel Amelot at a time when the Marais or ancient ‘marsh’ of Paris was literally awash with aristocrats, political figures and literary and artistic talent. These were the days of the ladies ‘salon’ where aristocratic females such as Madame de Sevigne and Madame de LaFayette spent long afternoon’s letter-writing and gossiping over canapés. Here during the age of the enlightenment, Moliere wrote plays, Mansard designed buildings and Mozart performed his first piano concert at the tender age of seven.
It was also at about this time that this apartment building on Rue Malher was constructed.
Nestled neatly in a nook on the first floor, an Australian designer has created an aesthetic of tranquility and romance in her one bedroom apartment located on this ancient street. Removed from the sidewalk with the charm of a private, walled terrace, the apartment is a cozy getaway from the buzz of the Parisian bumble bees. Fully furnished with kitchenette, bedroom and separate salon, this fashionable flat is decorated to a very high quality and is fully equipped with all you could ever need to enjoy life as a Parisian.
Ideally located between the beautiful Place des Vosges, the Rue des Rosiers and the Place de St. Paul, guests to the Rue Malher will have the benefits of experiencing the best of Parisian 17th century architecture, the culinary and cultural delights of the neighboring Jewish quarter and the bubbling activity of the Marais endless fashion boutiques.
Colorful café’s may have replaced literary salons, and museums have moved into many of the beautiful hotel particulaires but for those who know Paris, everyone from Henry IV to Sevigne, the modern tourist to Beaumarchais knows that for those seeking ‘le vrai article’ Le Marais is the place to stay.
