Boulangers
In a city renowned for fine foodstuffs and ‘Haute Cuisine’, the very name of this medieval street, ‘la rue des Boulangers”, or Baker’s Street, evokes images of bakers toiling away at their ovens, turning out exquisite pastries and fresh bread on a daily basis. In France, pastry, bread, and those who make it have status far greater than in any other culture. The Frenchman with his baguette in hand is a common, even laughable cliché; but it does represent an ongoing reality in French culture. Although no one knows for sure just how this street name originated, it is probably safe to bet that bakers were abundant on the street and in the area. Alas, there is not a single bakery remaining, on this street these days...
A somewhat obscure thoroughfare, you can live in Paris for years without ever knowing that the rue des Boulangers even exists, since it is not a major road and it therefore gets very little traffic. Tucked away in the 5th arrondissement next to the 1st century AD Roman Arena (which was rediscovered and uncovered in the second half of the 19th century) this Baker’s street has the winding ‘Old World’ charm of the Middle Ages stamped on it like a Baker’s B.
The flat itself is located at the back of a quiet courtyard on the ground floor. The stone walls and exposed beams serve to remind you that you are living in a building that is hundreds of years old. This is a small jewel of a place, replete with everything that you could need for an autonomous stay in the heart of historic Paris: washer, dryer, fully equipped kitchen, cable TV, Wi-Fi, etc. Despite the small size, the flat can sleep 4; although everyone would have to be on very good terms to share such an intimate space. The flat is best suited to one or two people who can spread out a bit, put their feet up, and enjoy the luxury of having 2 to 3 times more space that any central Paris hotel would provide for the same price.
If you walk out of your building door and turn to the right, you will come out near the Seine river, not far from the Jardin des Plantes. If you go out the door to the left, you will go uphill to get to the rue Monge, the rue Descartes, and the rue Clovis, just below the Pantheon, where the largest remaining remnant of the 12th century Philippe Auguste city wall juts out to the edge of the street. One of Paris’s longest and liveliest streets, both day and night, the renowned rue Mouffetard where the young Hemingway lived, is just around the corner. In fact, within 5 minutes in any direction, you can discover a wealth of bars, restaurants, age old streets and architectural splendours that cover the full range of Parisian history from Roman times to the present day. Here you are truly in the heart of historic Paris, just beyond the tourist hordes, yet all the while in the very thick of the action. Now what more could you ask for?
Well…how about a warm baguette fresh out of the oven?
